Untangle

[Skills] Editorial Publication, Branding, Social Media Content

In response to the 2021 Atlanta shooting and rise of Asian hate crimes, Untangle is student-run zine centering around the AAPI experience at Boston University. Untangle is named after the sentiment that we are all woven from countless tangled threads defining us and our relationship with one another. By unravelling these threads, we can understand the harmony and tension in finding with our cultural identities.

As a staff designer for the first issue of Untangle “SWEETBITTER,” I joined cofounders Alyssa Yeh and Emily Wu’s mission in creating and fostering a space for students to voice their narratives. Acting as a trifecta of Asian American art, literature, and history, the zine is submission-based, and features written or artistic works from students.

As Editor-in-Chief and Art Director for the second issue “TEA,” I worked on restructuring the expanded staff, curating the theme and student submissions, establishing the zine’s design guideline, designing social media content, and managing the printing, publishing, and distributing of over 200 copies.

I then worked with my staff to organize and host a launch party of the second issue welcoming over 170 guests. The launch party included a poetry reading of written submissions featured in the zine, live performances by two Asian American student musicians, a raffle, and the distribution of zines and merchandise.
